Unmatched Legacy of Keeping Care Local

A woman’s health and livelihood can be severely impacted by conditions such as endometriosis, which affects nearly 10 percent of the world’s female population, according to the US National Institutes of Health. Endometriosis is most common in women in their 30s and 40s, but it can begin in girls as young as eight years of age. For many affected women, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery with cutting-edge technology such as the da Vinci® Surgical Robotic System can provide the healing and relief that drastically improves their lives. At Academy Women’s Healthcare Associates in Colorado Springs, a dynamic team of highly trained OB/GYN physicians with decades of expertise and thousands of successful gynecologic surgeries can provide world-class women’s healthcare - all close to home.

For more than 25 years, the OB/GYN physicians at Academy Women’s Healthcare Associates in Colorado Springs have been providing expert, compassionate, and mission-based women’s health care. Through an enduring commitment to that mission, they have set the standard for women’s health care in the Pikes Peak region. From care for menstrual disorders, fertility issues, pregnancy, or menopause symptoms, our dedicated providers combine medical expertise with a compassionate touch to care for the mind, body, and spirit of our patients – all close to home.

“Since we began practicing in 1994, we have been honored to care for women of all ages in Colorado Springs and from all over southern Colorado,” said Dr. Kevin Weary, Obstetrics and Gynecology physician with AWHA. “We presently have eight doctors in our practice, all highly skilled in gyn surgery, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Six of our doctors also utilize the da Vinci® Surgical Robotic System – with our AWHA surgeons being among the first to use that technology for gynecology in southern Colorado.”

Every member of the AWHA team – including physicians, triage nurses, and front desk staff – is honored to provide excellent, compassionate care to women of all ages. AWHA experts offer comprehensive women’s health care at all ages and stages, including well-woman checks, family planning, prenatal and delivery care, and menopause management. Gynecologic surgery, when needed, including minimally invasive robotic surgery for gynecologic conditions including fibroids, incontinence, pelvic pain, endometriosis, and vaginal prolapse, are also offered.

“We are all highly trained in all aspects of gynecologic surgery, utilizing a variety of techniques. We have even performed live surgeries under video feeds at the St. Francis Medical Center campus to train other physicians on different laparoscopic techniques,” Dr. Weary said. “This is a fully-capable OB/GYN practice, it was our group that developed the Perinatal Medicine Program for Centura Health Colorado group for our highest risk pregnancies. We have been collaborating with and consulting for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services since the 1990s.”

Dr. Weary moved to Colorado Springs in 1996 following his residency at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, and met with AWHA’s founding doctors, among them Dr. David Stark. He was excited and inspired by a shared mission to provide women’s health care that combines medical expertise with empathy and compassion, taking pride in cultivating lifelong relationships, one patient at a time.

“We believe in partnering with each patient to provide care that benefits her physical, emotional, and spiritual health,” Dr. Weary said. “From a mission perspective and from a career perspective, it now makes perfect sense for AWHA to now be joining Centura on a permanent basis, and we are all honored to join with CHPG to improve the health and lives of the women in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, and beyond.”

As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect,” and with more than 33,000 babies delivered over 25 years, AWHA, part of Centura Health, have had lots and lots of practice. AWHA’s experienced OB/GYN physicians are committed to listening and connecting with patients and to providing personalized care throughout every stage of life to achieve whole person care.

What do 25 years of practice and 33,000 deliveries mean for AWHA? It means Dr. Weary, Dr. Stark, and the rest of the highly trained and experienced OB/GYN physicians are prepared to treat all women’s health needs and conditions, from the onset of puberty to post-menopause.

While some practices accept only low-rise obstetrical cases and routine gynecologic cases, AWHA providers excel in all aspects on women’s health care and are among the region’s most experienced obstetricians and gynecologic surgeons.

“Individually we each have lots of experience and expertise; collectively we have even more. We take even the toughest and most high-risk cases because we trust in each other’s abilities and our own,”

~ Dr. Weary said.

“AWHA’s C-section rates is much lower than the national average of nearly 30 percent – ours is below 20 percent, and that is in spite of our higher risk, higher acuity patient population. We strive to meet our patients hopes and desires for their pregnancy and their delivery, we  manage labor well, we are patient in the labor process, and we are exceptionally well prepared and equipped to deal with the unexpected situations that arise in pregnancy and in labor.”
